There is information needed to score a tournament beyond the teams and appraisers.  This includes:

  1. general information about the tournament such at where and when it is scheduled
This information it typically needed for any output from the scoring that might be printed or placed on a website.

  2. the rules for advancement to the next level of competition
The teams advancing to the next level of competition are often as important as the winners of the competition.  For the scoring program to determine the advancing teams, it needs to know the advancement rules.

The Resource Area has #1 information because it setup the tournament.  It passes this information to the scoring programs.

The Resource Area does not always know the advancement rules.

  • an affiliate decides the advancement rules from regional tournaments to the affiliate tournament
  • the Resource Area does know the advancement rules from the affiliate tournaments to Global Finals as DIHQ sets the rules each season, however, you might have 2 affiliate tournaments an need to setup special rules
  • there are no advancing teams from Global Finals

The Scoring Program Settings page lets you see and set some of this information for the scoring programs.  You can reach this page from the Tournament Dashboard (Tournaments=>dashboard).  The Scoring Program Settings button in the Scoring Program section will display this page.

In the screenshot below, the settings for a regional tournament are displayed.

  • Minutes when late is a setting specific to the Web Scoring Program (WSP)
  • Advance Places is used by both WSP and CSP
  • Advancement Method is used by both WSP and CSP
Advancement rules are a complex topic described in greater detail here.  In the screen shot below, the level method was selected.  The rules that follow indicate the number of teams that will advance based on the level of the chal-lev.
  • Advancement Rules are used by both WSP and CSP
Encoding advancement rules is also a bit complex. Each input captures a rule. A rule is a list of comma separated integers. The integers refer to the number of teams competing against one another in a chal-lev.  The first integer says 1 team will advance if you have this many teams in the chal-lev (1 in the example).  The second number says 2 teams will advance if you have this many teams in the chal-lev (3 in example).  3rd number: 3 teams advance when there are this many teams (6 in example).  As this can be difficult to understand, the Interpret Rule button in the Interpret Advancement Rules area will put your rules into words.  For more on advancement rules click here.
  • Include Early Learning is specific to the WSP

Once you set these settings, they are supplied to either the WSP or CSP.  For the WSP they are provided when it is launched.  For the CSP this information is provided when using the tournaments wizard to setup the tournament.
